If you seen some political arguments online, some say that the left wing has always been on the right side of history, and the right wing has always been on the wrong side of history. They use many past examples and try to associate it with today’s society. Some liberals even tell conservatives that the war has already been won, because “history is on their side”. Well actually, if you focus on recent trends, you can see that even the left wing hasn’t won the war in today’s time.
I will be honest, since the United States became a country, the left wing has won more conflicts over the right wing. The biggest examples proving this point is that in all four of the most significant wars the US was involved in, the left-wing has won over the right-wing.
- During the Revolutionary War, colonists have declared independence from Britain and rejected monarchy. They also believed the idea that human rights are natural and gifted by God, which is something that the government can’t take away. When there is a king and a hierarchy, this idea is very progressive. And that’s why the left-wing (colonists) won against the right-wing (British monarchy).
- Many people can agree that the Civil War was all about the fight to end slavery. As you know, the South has always been America’s more conservative region. Even if they get more progressive like the rest of the country, they still remain to be more conservative than the rest. Well, the South, which fought to keep slavery and stay out of the Union, has lost, while the North, which fought to end slavery, won. Not only did they abolish slavery, but they also granted citizenship rights to freed slaves and gave all racial groups the right to vote. And once again, the left-wing (Union) won against the right-wing (Confederacy).
- Despite America’s ugly nationalist attitudes during World War I, people can see that the Central Powers were the right winged side of the conflict, and the Allied Powers were the left winged side of the conflict. This is technically true since America, Britain, and France were primarily democratic, while Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire were primarily empires or kingdoms. In fact, the whole reason why the war started was because of tensions between the stronger Austro-Hungarian Empire (which wanted more land) and the weaker Serbia (which wanted to be independent). Germany, the very nation that expanded the battle between Serbia and Austria-Hungary to a world war, has lost, and the Allies has won, which is another example of a left-wing (Allies) victory over the right wing (Central Powers).
- It’s even more obvious during World War II. Adolf Hitler was a right-wing extremist who took over Germany through unconstitutional and aggressive means and committed genocide against the Jews and several other groups. Franklin D Roosevelt was a left-wing president who started welfare programs to lift people out of the depression. Moreover, the dictatorships that Germany, Italy, and Japan prove that dictatorship is mostly right-winged. Joseph Stalin’s regime may prove that left-wing dictatorships exist, but even so, the Soviet Union was on the Allied Forces during World War II. And once again, the left-wing (Allies) won over the right-wing (Axis Powers).
The left-wing also successfully broke up monopolies and trusts, implemented government assistance like Social Security and Medicare, abolished Jim Crow segregation and passed the Civil Rights Act, and expanded the right to vote to women, 18-year-olds, and residents of Washington DC. This shows that the left-wing has mostly won over the right-wing.
But starting in 1981, when Ronald Reagan became president, that started to change. If you have noticed, history shows that most of the country wants to be like California and New York, which were the centers of personal freedoms. But since Obama became president, these two states were the last two states that you want America to become like. This is especially true since the COVID-19 Pandemic started. The South, which previously had slavery and enforced Jim Crow statutes, made the biggest gains in population since 2020. New York, California, and Michigan were the states of high taxation and excessive regulation, while Texas, Georgia, and Florida, had more economic freedom and favored personal freedoms.
The question is: Who is on the wrong side of history had history begun in 1981? Is it the left, or is it the right? I will go ahead and explain why I believe the left-wing is on the wrong side.
Reason #1 – Nothing Lasts Forever:
Liberalism has mostly won over conservatism in the United States for the first 200 years, as many social progresses and war victories prove this point. However, progress will eventually reach its limits.
Like I said before, the North has consistently been better than the South, and California and New York were the states that the rest of the country wanted to be like. But this was true back when the South had slavery and Jim Crow laws. But as soon as Jim Crow started to crumble as African-Americans are welcomed more, the advantages of the South (like warmer weather and cheaper land) started to shine. At the same time, New York and California implemented many regulations to keep them “happy”, which is a driving factor to moving out of these states. If a former Confederate state and Jim Crow State is having population and economic gains in the 21st century, while a “free state” is having population and economic losses, that’s telling you a lot.
It’s not limited to the liberal swing or conservative swing. Many empires and regimes have fallen over our history. Medieval France believed that Catholicism will never lose influence over France. But after the French Revolution, it has. The Roman Empire, it lasted quite a long time, but due to inside conflicts and outside invasions, the Roman Empire has fallen. The British Empire would stand for as long as the British followed the system that kept it up, but when they started forgetting about it, it has fallen as well. America will eventually face this fate as well. It may last as long as 1,000 years before it finally falls apart for good.
It even happens at a smaller scale. Think of all those big businesses that dominated one industry and went bankrupt and defunct after another industry took over. Think of all these times when sports teams dominated championships in that sport until they start doing so badly that they don’t even make it to the postseason for a long time. We might see cinema change after decades of summertime blockbusters, Christmastime blockbusters, franchising (sequels and reboots), and the obsession of diversity. We might see big name brands in oligopolies like the soda industry and film industry fall to smaller brands as these industries will downgrade into monopolistic competitions.
You see, history has been on the liberals’ side, but even that will eventually change. This doesn’t mean we’ll go back to owning slaves, keeping women in the kitchen, or giving all power to the rich. What will happen is that progress won’t continue any further. And if it does, it’ll be right-wing progress rather than left-wing progress.
Reason #2 – Modern Liberalism isn’t really liberal:
So here’s something that was true about past conflicts. Religion was on the left-wing’s side, while the right-wing fought against freedom and liberty in favor of censorship and control. America, despite promoting religious freedom, was primarily a Christian nation. The liberals were able to win against conservatives by using Christianity, fighting for freedom and liberty.
Let’s name some ideas that were very progressive for each time:
- In 1809, ending the Federalist Party was quite progressive.
- In 1819, even having states where slavery is illegal was quite progressive.
- In 1859, abolishing slavery was the most progressive idea.
- In 1869, the 14th and 15th amendments were the post progressive ideas.
- In 1909, ending trusts and monopolies was the most progressive idea.
- In 1919, giving women the right to vote was the most progressive idea.
- In 1959, passing the Civil Rights Act was the most progressive idea.
- In 1969, equality among men and women was the most progressive idea.
Those were all good things that we did in the past. These have given people freedom, liberty, and equality, while no group has control over others.
And then, this is what we got:
- In 2009, Obamacare was the most progressive idea.
- In 2019, banning Chick-fil-A from city airports over their corporate funding history was the most progressive idea.
How did the side that created the Constitution, abolished slavery, and granted civil rights become the side that wants to ban all Harry Potter media, boycotted the 2017 game A Hat in Time for refusing to drop JonTron’s voice cameo (even if he’s not getting paid and is only one line), and changed the Fantasmic greeting to remove “ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls” when it’s not even offensive? This is when they start becoming on the wrong side of history. Because the right side of history didn’t fight for censorship and control.
Don’t get me wrong. Today’s right wing (the MAGAists) are also doing the same thing that the left wing fought against ages ago. The censorship of anything that doesn’t agree with Trump, the attacks on DEI initiatives, and the ICE raids, all of that is fascist and is another example proving that the right wing is in the wrong. But the left wing is no better. They’re the ones who are pushing for censorship and regulation, whether they’re in power or not in power. And some of the stuff they’re fighting for isn’t really “progressive” How is it progressive to add needless and unreasonable regulation of businesses? How is it progressive to censor average everyday stuff to cater to others’ social needs? How is it progressive to ban religious organizations for practicing their religion when it conflicts the left-wing agenda?
Another thing today’s liberals did was that they abandoned religion. Was it because of the ban on the mandated school prayer? No, it was the Roe v Wade decision that started to break the church from the left. For much of our history, the church sided with both sides, mostly leaning to the left wing. But since 1980, they sided with the right wing.
Technically, if both sides are using Christianity to promote their agenda today, that would offend God. Here is some advice: as the shepherd, you are not to let the wolves in to your pen. But you should also treat your sheep with respect. A church that promotes sin is doing the devil’s work, but MAGA Christianity involves pride, the very sin that separated the devil from God. If history continues this trend, then you will lose if the church is not on your side. And that is when the centrists and the middle class will have all the power.
Just letting you know, you can win when your mantra is “give me liberty or give me death”. But you can’t win when your mantra is “your rights end where my feelings begin”. And had the right-wing not sold their souls to Donald Trump or MAGAism, then they will be on the right side of recent history.
Reason #3 – Their values and policies today are destroying America:
Actually, both sides are destroying America today. If George Washington warned us anything, it’s intense polarization, foreign interference on domestic policy, and high national debt. The left wing will always keep touting that they are always on the right side of history. But it’s hard to see them on the right side of history if you only focus on what they did in 2020 and later. I’m telling you, we’re not looking at American history since 1754. We’re looking at American history since 2020.
Actually, if you were to go back in time to when they started becoming this radical, the earliest I would go back to is 1977. Like always, America has gotten more and more progressive as the 20th century went by. But even for the time, Jimmy Carter was too radical. Between the inflation, the unemployment, and the Iran Hostage Crisis, he did a terrible job as president. This is what led to the rise of conservatism after years of keeping it in check. But then, Bill Clinton put us in a bubble of compromise. That was pretty good, until Barack Obama popped that bubble.
Here are the most noteworthy examples of why they’re in the wrong:
- They supported the COVID-19 Lockdowns. Other than everything related to the American Civil War (which includes both slavery and Jim Crow), the destruction of Indigenous cultures, and the Japanese internment camps, this is the most shameful thing America has ever did within its 250-year history. I’m okay with most COVID protocols like social distancing, mask mandates, and vaccine mandates, but stay-at-home orders is the one thing I cannot get behind. My main argument against them is that they took away peoples’ freedoms, and the very idea taking away peoples’ freedoms makes them very, very, very uncomfortable. Being allowed to leave the house during the pandemic isn’t license. It’s freedom. Additionally, it has destroyed the economy (think of the inflation and shortages), divided people even further, and made people antisocial and apathetic (hence the crime surge).
- That same year, many of their supporters rioted like barbarians. Yeah, that’s not what the politicians were doing. What they were doing wrong was that they were permissive of them. They supported limiting mass gatherings to contain the spread, but they allowed them to engage in mass gatherings. In fact, they allowed them to loot and vandalize buildings and assault anyone these protestors didn’t like. They allowed them to topple over statues of historical figures, but placed hate crime charges on people who clean up any vandalism the protestors did. They refused to punish anyone who rioted (even if they are doing significant damage), and instead would rather punish anyone who defend themselves from the rioters.
- Going even further on the George Floyd riots, they also are deeply offended at anyone who takes a neutral stance. I can name a few cases where people are being treated equally and when civility was enforced, only for the ones in charge to be criticized or punished for being “neutral”. The biggest examples being the Ed Sheeran controversy and the Bob Chapek controversy.
- Biden’s border policy was the most disastrous policy of his within his presidency. To get back at Trump and in the name of “human rights”, he made it easier to cross the border, creating a national border crisis. It was so bad that state governments were defying federal law by putting immigration in their hands, impeached Biden’s secretary of Homeland Security, and revoked due process for migrants and sent ICE raids to sweep the entire country when Trump took back office.
- And of course, political correctness is getting more and more ridiculous to the point where anyone can be punished for not agreeing with the liberals’ warped view of reality.
If there’s anything today’s liberals have the right to be upset about, it’s the Jan 6 Insurrection and the conservative’s handling of it. After all, it was a right-wing attack, done by conservatives who were unwilling to accept the 2020 Election results. And whether it was done by the left or by the right, this was an attack on democracy. Not only did we never have that before 2021, but this event also mirrors a story in the Bible on how Satan fell from God. Trump’s source of his false election claims was his pride, the original sin of Satan. These false election claims led to sedition, which was the sin that got Satan sent to Hell. And when Trump did come back to office, he pardoned or commuted all of the Jan 6 rioters. That’s pure injustice.
Conclusion:
To be honest, neither the left-wing nor right-wing are in the right today. But if the right-wing dumps the Trump and the left-wing continue their antics, the right-wing will be on the right side of recent history.
One more thing. If you live in Texas and are going to vote, vote James Talarico. Both Paxton and Talarico are nutjobs, but I believe Talarico will become another senator like Kyrsten Sinema, who was a radical leftist before running for Senate, then became one of the sanest and most reasonable senators. In other words, James Talarico will eventually be a good senator, but Ken Paxton will forever be a bad senator.
