Glow City – Story Development:

Most of the week will cover gameplay information, but today’s is about the story part of the game. In particular, the characters and the story.

Characters:

Throughout the entire game, there are only nine major characters, which are two RevivePlay executives, one Glow City leader, and six robotic insect villains.

Kaylee Cook

The main character of the game and founder of RevivePlay is Kaylee Cook. She found the company of RevivePlay on June 21st, 2010 with the goal of bringing back 3D Collectathon Platformers. She is the oldest employee of RevivePlay the president of the company.

Appearance:

  • Kaylee is tall and skinny. She is white, her eyes are blue, and her hair is long, blonde, and curly, tied in a ponytail with a sideswept bang at the front.
  • Her primary outfit consists of an orange polo shirt, dark green khakis, white socks, and brown shoes. She wears a dark gray coat with her outfit.

Personality:

  • Kaylee is an average woman who appears to be nice, but she does not like to communicate with others besides her family and higher ups.
  • She is very smart and knowledgeable with computers and video games. She also has a balance between what gamers want and what’s good for business.
  • She has more appeal to nostalgia and tradition than she does for innovation and progress.

Other Details:

  • She is born on January 2nd, 1985. No other RevivePlay employee is born prior to that date.
  • She believed that video games and TV shows were at their best during her teenage years.
  • She is a mother of four children, with her oldest son being 15 years old as of 2016 and her youngest daughter being 7 as of 2016. She got married in 2003 to Robert Cook.
Courtney Baker

The secondary character of the game and the vice president of RevivePlay. She got a job in RevivePlay in 2013 because her mother was a good friend of Kaylee’s. Her productive behavior resulted in a vice president promotion. She is the youngest employee of the company.

Appearance:

  • Courtney is tall and skinny. She is white, her eyes are green, and her hair is long, blonde, straight, and tied in a bun. She has a sideswept bang.
  • Her primary outfit consists of a pink dress that is elbow-length sleeved and slightly shorter than knee-length, thick black tights, and black slip-on shoes.

Personality:

  • Courtney is very sweet and very welcoming of everyone. She was in charge of hiring others and would be polite even when turning down others.
  • Despite appeal to nostalgia, she is more open-minded and sensible than the rest of the company.
  • She is better at writing and story development, but not as good at math or computer programming. But she is just as good as her boss and friend when it comes to business.

Other Details:

  • She is born on December 30th, 1994. No other RevivePlay employee is born after that date.
  • She enjoys puzzle books and reading more than video games.
  • Her favorite type of clothing is a dress. Every day, she wears a dress, both at school and at work.
Lola

The helper character of the game. She represents the life of Kaylee’s computer. As the queen of Glow City, she is the most powerful program. However, she was greatly weakened by the cyber roaches, which also attacked Glow City.

Appearance:

  • Throughout the game, her appearance changes, depending on how many robotic insects you defeat. Regardless, she is tall and skinny, just like Kaylee and Courtney, and her hair is long and tied in a bun.
  • At the beginning, she is very pale with grayish-blonde hair and red eyes. She wears a tattered dark gray dress that has short sleeves and is slightly shorter than knee length, tattered socks, and tattered gray shoes.
  • After you defeat Glow Hornet, her eyes turn brown as her hair turns honey blonde. Her skin gets slightly tanner. Her eyes eventually turn green, and then blue.
  • Regarding her clothes, after defeating Glow Hornet, she wears a dark gray dress, white socks, and black shoes that look new. After defeating Glow Spider, her dress’s sleeves are slightly longer as she gains a pair of black pants. After defeating Glow Scorpion, her dress is grayish pink. After defeating Glow Cicada, her dress is hot pink as her pants are navy blue. After defeating Glow Moth, her dress sparkles as she gains a crystal-clear crown.

Personality:

  • Like her appearance, she gains more personality as you defeat more of the robotic insect generals.
  • At the very beginning, she is apathetic, uncaring, cynical, and neutral.
  • After defeating Glow Hornet, she regains her intelligence and her caring personality.
  • After defeating Glow Spider, she becomes more optimistic and is nicer.
  • After defeating Glow Scorpion, she becomes more social and informative.
  • After defeating Glow Cicada, she becomes sweet and very friendly.
  • After defeating Glow Moth, her personality doesn’t change, but she became more powerful than ever.

Other Details:

  • Her name is short for “Lead Operating Light Algorithm”. She represents Kaylee’s computer’s brain.
  • Because she is a part of Kaylee’s computer, she knows everything about RevivePlay and their projects.
  • For as long as she has full power, she can recover not just Glow City (which represents Kaylee’s computer), but also neighboring cities (which represent other company computers).
Robotic Insects
  • Cyber Roach Queen – the main antagonist and leader of the cyber roaches, the robotic insects that represent very bad crashing bugs.
  • Glow Spider – the leader of the cyber spiders, which overrun the game Critter Cram. They represent framerate glitches.
  • Glow Scorpion – the leader of the cyber scorpions, which overrun the game American Adventures. They represent gameplay glitches.
  • Glow Cicada – the leader of the cyber cicadas, which overrun the game City Life. They represent sound glitches.
  • Glow Moth – the leader of the cyber moths, which overrun the game Winter Quest. They represent graphics glitches.
  • Glow Hornet – one of the cyber bees that evolved into a cyber moth, she is the one who was responsible for the creation of the cyber roaches. Upset at Lola for patching her swarm of bees, she sworn revenge by stealing the golden microchips from Glow City’s bug security station. This allowed the creation of the cyber roaches.

Story:

RevivePlay is a Texas-based indie game company that makes new video games using old gameplay. But things have not been so great for the company. One month before its sixth anniversary, their computers experienced crashing glitches. They originated in Kaylee’s computer, but they expanded to every single computer in the company. It even went so far that the company had only 12 hours left to fix the computers or throw out every computer and get new computers. But even that option wasn’t a good idea because all of their game production data were on the current computers.

On June 21st, 2016, RevivePlay’s sixth anniversary, President Kaylee Cook found a new solution. It was to travel inside the computer. She and her vice president, Courtney Baker, went inside the computer world. They arrived in a digital world called Glow City, where they met a person named Lola. At first glance, she looked very poor, weak, and uncaring. But the two women learned that she used to be the most powerful person in Glow City. Ever since the cyber roaches took over the city, they have done extensive damage. They have killed several people in the city. The deaths of many people also resulted in the power going out and Lola losing her powers.

At the current state of Glow City, Lola had six months to defeat all of the cyber roaches and fix everything. Otherwise, the world will end, with nobody getting an afterlife. Thankfully, with Kaylee’s and Courtney’s arrival in Glow City, Lola finally had hope that everything would be fixed. She instantly gave the girls two light up charms and trained them. The girls picked up both digital swords and light-beam guns to fight against the cyber roaches.

The girls learned that the reason why the cyber roaches existed in the first place was because all of the golden microchips inside the bug security station were stolen. A cyber wasp named Glow Hornet stole the golden microchips and placed them into various projects. For as long as not all of the golden microchips are in place, more dangerous robotic insects like the cyber roaches would exist in Glow City. So in order to save Glow City, the girls needed to find the golden microchips. But the first thing they had to get done was defeating Glow Hornet. She was the robotic insect responsible for the creation of the cyber roaches, and if the girls attempt taking the golden microchips, she will interfere with their work. So after the girls finished their training, they looked for Glow Hornet and defeated her.

After they defeated Glow Hornet, Lola started regaining some of her strength and powers. She wasn’t powerful enough to restore the city, but she was powerful enough to open one of temples in Glow City. She opened the western temple, which allowed the girls to enter the game Critter Cram. The girls learned that they can help Lola regain her strength for every robotic insect general they defeat, but to discourage them from facing the robotic insects too soon, she enforced golden microchip locks, which blocked the girls from accessing certain areas.

While the girls were working on finding the golden microchips, the cyber roaches were ready to execute their one final plan. Their goal was to enter all of the faraway cities representing the computers of RevivePlay’s customers. And the way they could do that is by accessing the Internet Portal. But due to the power loss in the city, the portal operators had to shut down the portal. Unwilling to accept that, the Cyber Roach Queen intimidated the portal operators, demanding them to open the portal. She was even going to kill the portal operators, even though they could not open the portal. At the same time, after being brought news that Glow Hornet was dead, the Cyber Roach Queen ordered a cyber roach army to go after Kaylee and Courtney.

As Kaylee and Courtney defeated each robotic insect general, Lola regained more powers. She used her powers to restore each district of the city. Meanwhile, the golden microchips were adding pressure to the cyber roaches, making it difficult for new ones to spawn or even current ones to exist. The Cyber Roach Queen eventually killed all of the portal operators, but the portal still wouldn’t open. The portal did open as soon as the whole city was restored, but by the time it got to that point, it was already too late. The Cyber Roach Queen’s scheme has been reversed, and the cyber roaches would have a hard time existing.

The Cyber Roach Queen arrived in the internet station, where she and her cyber roaches could explore every customers’ devices, but Kaylee and Courtney has stopped them there. Instead of continuing further, she decided to fight the two girls. The two girls defeated the Cyber Roach Queen and killed every remaining cyber roach. The cyber roach population went extinct, and Glow City has been saved.

Kaylee and Courtney have left back to the real world. Although they spent six months in Glow City, it was still June 2016, where they learned that they were inside the computer for 12 hours. The two girls promised that they will start storing their data onto flash drives.

Postgame Story:

If you have not collected all of the golden microchips, Kaylee would realize that she hasn’t gotten all of the golden microchips yet. The duo may have defeated the Cyber Roach Queen and saved Glow City, but the fact that not all golden microchips were found created the possibility that the Cyber Roach Queen will come back. So whoever you played as will go back and finish the quest.

If you have collected all of the golden microchips, the girls decided that they would like to visit Glow City again. However, one of them chose to stay out while the other went inside.

If you have purchased the Future Travels DLC, Lola would warn Kaylee or Courtney that the Cyber Roach Queen is back. Although she couldn’t do much in taking over Glow City, she was more powerful than before. She and her cyber roaches were occupying RevivePlay’s newest project, Future Travels. The girl who previously collected the golden microchips decided to stay and stop the Cyber Roach Queen. While visiting Glow City again, she has learned that there were still some golden microchips missing. In fact, they were even hidden in a project that she couldn’t access.

If you have collected all of the golden microchips and defeated the Cyber Roach Queen in a rematch, you will unlock a cutscene where Kaylee and Courtney were 100% sure that they solved the computer crashing glitches for good.
