Since this year is BIONICLE’s 25th Anniversary, and since I’ve spent all year collecting BIONICLE sets last year, I decided to write a guide on collecting BIONICLE sets.
Back in 2001, in attempt for LEGO to save themselves from failing, they created a theme with a huge backstory, using the Technic pieces. BIONICLE became so much of a success that it saved LEGO while it lasted quite a while. The initial run lasted nine years, but then it got rebooted, only for that to fail. Just like Pokémon, Neopets, and other things that were trends back when the Millennials (people born between 1981 to 1996) were kids, BIONICLE was very popular in the early 2000’s. It eventually lost popularity, and it was hardly talked about with anyone except within the fandom.
Nowadays, the original fans are in their 30’s. People that age would have kids, have a job, and own a house. Now that they have a source of disposable income, those who were more interested into collecting BIONICLE sets and pieces at the time have been collecting them since 2020. Even I was one of the people who collecting BIONICLE sets when I was a kid. For the longest time during my adulthood years, I was without a single BIONICLE set or a happy BIONICLE collection. But in 2025, I started collecting them again. As of now, I have considered every set and collectibles released all the way up to 2005. This consideration also includes collecting additional characters and creatures that can be built with LEGO pieces, but not sold or advertised as sets.
If you are interested into collecting BIONICLE sets, then you came to the right place. You probably have grown up playing with them, but don’t have the sets anymore. You probably missed them out completely, then gained interest. Or maybe you weren’t even born or were too young to remember. But if you have a BrickLink account, you can get your BIONICLE sets today. The original hype is over, and the series is long-discontinued. But you can join in today and see the world in the past. Without using any bias for or against any sets based on year, and without singling out any BrickLink sellers, here are my tips and tricks on ordering them.
General Tips:
Starting with the general tips, these aren’t about collection plans, but they are strong recommendations. To minimize the amount of money you spend on them and to have the best experience, here are the general tips:
- You can only buy from your home country, unless if the set you want doesn’t have any sellers from your home country, but American buyers must buy from American sellers only. Otherwise, you’ll be paying extra due to tariffs and higher costs of shipping. That, and pretty much every BIONICLE set has at least one US seller.
- At the same time, if you live in the United States, you don’t have to limit yourself to stores within your home state. For example, I live in Texas, and most of my orders came from other states.
- Be sure to keep record of how much you spend on BIONICLE sets and pieces, including the taxes, shipping, and additional costs. When you make an order, your order will stay in your records on BrickLink up to six months. Any records made in your personal documents will stay forever, but records on the BrickLink website will disappear once it’s been six months since your order.
- No Instructions? No problem. You can check other sites for free LEGO instructions. The best place to find LEGO instructions for BIONICLE sets is Biosector01, since they have information on every set. For some sets like the Tohunga (or McDonald’s Matoran or diminished Matoran), you don’t even need to read the instructions to finish them.
- You don’t need the boxes or canisters. It would be better to save more space and have less trash.
- If you don’t mind spending more on new sets, you may go ahead and buy the new sets. However, I strongly recommend buying the used sets over the new sets.
- Speaking used sets, you want to look for the cheapest items with a good enough quality. Minor scratches may not be a big deal, but strong discoloration or major dents can be a dealbreaker. As for incomplete sets, if the set is missing stuff like rubber bands, disks, or ammo, don’t worry. You can order them separately. But if they’re missing masks, weapons, or required pieces, you should refrain from buying them.
- While it’s wise to buy the cheapest set available, it would be better to minimize the number of orders you make, which includes buying from fewer sellers and buying from the same sellers the least number of times. The more orders you make, the more you spend on shipping.
- At the same time, you don’t want to spend all of your money at once on BIONICLE sets. Aside to being super expensive, getting them all at once would take away the challenge of buying them.
- And of course, only buy the LEGO sets. Don’t buy the comics, games, or anything else.
In addition, you also need to read the sellers’ terms and conditions before making a purchase. Some orders don’t even ship to your home country. You also need to be a good buyer to the seller.

Small Collection Plans:
If you just jumped in or are starting from square one, you don’t want to collect everything at once. Depending on who you talk to about BIONICLE, some years are better than others. We have a class of fans who prefer the older sets, as they thought BIONICLE went downhill in the later years. We have some fans who prefer the newer sets, but do not like the older sets due to how odd they are. We also have some fans who appreciate both the older sets and newer sets, but completely condemn the G2 sets. And there are fans who think all of them are good and didn’t care if the later eras were an improvement or downgrade. I am from that first camp, who thought that BIONICLE was better back when it first came out, but then went downhill after the Mata Nui Era ended.
The reason why I prefer the older sets is because they had more gears, more moving parts, knockable masks, and better collectibles. Those who argue that the newer sets were better have a fair point, given that they have better joint articulation and more unique pieces. However, I want to go the path you feel like is best. The following collecting plans show the best ways to go when you’re collecting them. The problem with collecting everything is not only that it’s going to be more expensive, but also more space-consuming. If you don’t have much space, you can’t collect much. Hence why I recommend the smaller collection plans.
Collection Plan A – Quest of Masks
Description:
This collection plan involves a small BIONICLE collection, typically released between 2001 and 2003. But the collection also includes additional masks and pieces, showing that you got every matching piece to the set, not just what’s provided in the sets.
The collections that the collectible masks and stuff are made for are the Toa Mata, Toa Nuva, Turaga, Bohrok, Bohrok Va, Bohrok-Kal, and Rahkshi, which are linked to, in respective order, the Great Kanohi, the Noble Kanohi, the Kanohi Nuva, Krana, Krana Va, Krana-Kal, and Kraata.
Required Sets:
Although you can choose any collection of your choice, if you collect even one set from a particular collection, then you must collect all six of them. It’s an all-or-nothing deal. For instance, if you choose to buy Gali (one of the Toa Mata), then you must also buy Lewa, Kopaka, Onua, Pohatu, and Tahu, but you don’t have to collect any other sets that aren’t in the same collection. Then, you have to collect all of the corresponding collectibles. Say that you are collecting the Toa Mata. That means, you’ll also have to collect all 48 Great Kanohi (each mask comes in six different colors of the Toa, plus gold and silver). You can’t have a missing mask. How many collections you collect may be up to you, but a collection isn’t a happy collection until it’s complete.
- You must get all six sets from the same collection (Toa Mata, Turaga, Toa Nuva, Bohrok, Bohrok Va, Bohrok-Kal, Rahkshi).
If you get all six Toa Mata, you must collect all 48 Great Kanohi. - If you get all six Turaga, you must collect all 36 Noble Kanohi.
- If you get all six Toa Nuva, you must collect all 36 Kanohi Nuva.
- If you get all six Bohrok, you must collect all 48 Krana.
- If you get all six Bohrok Va, you must collect all 48 Krana Va.
- If you get all six Bohrok-Kal, you must collect all 48 Krana-Kal.
- If you get all six Rahkshi, you must collect all 36 Kraata.
Forbidden Sets:
Pretty much everything not mentioned in this collection plan are off the list. They include:
- Every set released after 2003.
- Every Titan set and Matoran set.
- All Kanohi that isn’t one of the Great Kanohi, Noble Kanohi, or Kanohi Nuva.
- Any Great Kanohi or Kanohi Nuva that is patterned or isn’t colored red, brown, black, green, white, blue, gold, or silver.
- Any Noble Kanohi that is patterned or isn’t colored orange, tan, dark gray, lime green, light gray, or medium blue.
- Any of the Sterling Silver Krana.
- Any Kraata that isn’t colored reddish gold, flat dark gold, pearl dark gray, metallic green, pearl very light gray, or pearl sand blue.
Variations:

Collection Plan B – One Year, Thoroughly Done
Description:
This collection plan involves collecting every single set released within a single year. However, this also means being more thorough than what was advertised. Although you do not have to collect any of the collectibles (no masks or disks), you may have to order extra parts to build additional creatures, depending on what year you’re getting.
Required Sets:
Whatever year you choose, you must buy every set released within the year as mentioned above. If any combiner sets, characters, or creatures are also part of the same year, you also need to build them. Remember not to let any collection go unfinished. By year, here’s how you can go:
- 2001:
- Sets required are all Toa Mata, Turaga, Diminished Matoran, 2001 Titans (also known as Rahi), and Master Builder Set (you must build all 15 creatures).
- You also need to build Takua, Kapura, Hafu, Taipu, Tamaru, Kopeke, and Hahli, along with the other six Matoran previously given away by McDonald’s.
- Additionally, you will need to build both Toa Kaita, Turaga Nui, both Matoran Kaita, Matoran Nui, Dikapi, Mata Nui Cow, Nui-Kopen, Kahu, Tarakava-Nui, Kuma-Nui, and Mana Ko.
- 2002:
- Sets required are all Toa Mata, Toa Nuva, Bohrok, Bohrok Va, and 2002 Titans.
- You also need to build both Bohrok Kaita and both Bohrok Va Kaita.
- 2003:
- Sets required are all Toa Nuva, Bohrok-Kal, Rahkshi, Rebuilt Matoran, 2003 Titans, and Takutanuva.
- You also need to build both Toa Nuva Kaita, both Bohrok-Kal Kaita, and both Rahkshi Kaita.
- If you can’t find Takutanuva, you can get repeat sets for Takanuva and Makuta.
- 2004:
- Sets required are all Toa Metru, Metru Matoran, Vahki, 2004 Titans, and Ultimate Dume.
- You must also build Kinloka, Kavinika, Kralhi, Kraawa, Kranua, and Kraahu.
- 2005:
- Sets required are all Toa Hordika, Rahaga, Visorak, 2005 Titans, Toa Iruini, Toa Norik, and Voporak.
- You must also build the Cable Crawler, Sea Spider, Rock Raptor, Gate Guardian, Kahgarak, Chute Lurker, Sentrakh, The Shadowed One, Ice Vermin, Colony Drone, Protocairn, Frostelus, Parakrekks, and Venom Flyer.
- 2006:
- Sets required are all Toa Inika, Piraka, Voya Matoran, 2006 Titans, Irnakk, and Vezon & Kardas.
- You must also build Lava Hawk, Dagger Spider, and Botar.
- 2007:
- Sets required are all Toa Mahri, Barraki, Mahri Matoran, and 2007 Titans.
- You must also build the Pit War Tortoise, Zyglak, and Manutri.
- 2008:
- Sets required are all Phantoka, Mistika, Av-Matoran, 2008 Titans, and 2008 Battle Vehicles.
- You must also build Spiriah, Trinuma, Swamp Stalker, Niazesk, and Destral Cycle.
- 2009 & 2010:
- Sets required are all Glatorians, Glatorian Legends, Agori, 2009 Titans, Stars, and 2009 Battle Vehicles.
- You must also build Sand Stalker and Gaardus.
- And don’t forget the “Golden Bionicles”.
- 2015:
- Sets required are all Masters, Protectors, and Skull Spiders.
- 2016:
- Sets required are all Uniters, Elemental Creatures, Elemental Beasts, Ekimu, and both Umarak Sets.
Forbidden Sets:
If you’re only collecting sets from one year, pretty much every set released from another year is forbidden. I will allow some exceptions though, as stated above. For example, the Master Builder Set was released in 2002, but they were based on creatures from 2001. You may also get the Bohrok-Kal for the 2002 collection despite being from 2003 and a different chapter.
What not to buy:
- Any set not released within the same year as the other sets, unless if they are part of the year’s story.
- Any of the playsets.
Collection Plan C – One Era, Completely Done
Description:
Similar to Collection Plan B, but this time, you’ll be collecting sets from multiple years rather than one year. Just one major difference though. Any of the combiner models, like Takutanuva, Nui-Kopen, and Kuma-Nui, will be thrown out. Of course, any characters not sold as sets are out of the question either. This one is simpler. Again, you don’t need to collect the collectibles. Just the sets.
Required Sets:
If you get one set from one year, you will not only have to get every set from the same year, but also the other years from the same era. This way, you’ll get a glimpse of the entire era, but not completely set within one year. By era, here are the required collections:

Collection Plan D – Toa Collection
Description:
As other small collection plans are about completion, this one is only cherry-picking one type of set – the Toa. Every year, except for 2003, LEGO has released six warrior sets from the same collection. In 2001, there was the Toa Mata. In 2002, there was the Toa Nuva. In 2004, there was the Toa Metru. In 2005, there was the Toa Hordika. In 2006, there was the Toa Inika. In 2007, there was the Toa Mahri. In 2008, half of the Phantoka and half of the Mistika were Toa, while the other half were Makutas. In 2009, there was the Glatorian and Glatorian Legends. In 2015, there was the Masters. And in 2016, there was the Uniters.
Required Sets:
Basically, you’ll need to collect all of the Toa sets, including other sets advertised as Toa sets. They are:

If you choose one set of one color or element, you’ll have to choose all of them of the same element, all the way up to 2006. This includes the collectibles. However, you only need to get the base sets and not any additional sets.

Master Collection Tips:
Of course, if you are interested into becoming a master collector for BIONICLE sets, you may have to not only collect them all, but you should also be doing it thoroughly. Although it may take you years, but here are everything you must collect:
- All of the main sets
- All of the playsets
- All of the Kaitas (Toa Kaita, Toa Nuva Kaita, Bohrok Kaita, Bohrok Va Kaita, Bohrok-Kal Kaita, Rahkshi Kaita, Turaga Nui, Matoran Kaita, Matoran Nui)
- The Chronicler’s Company (Takua, Kapura, Hafu, Taipu, Tamaru, Kopeke) and Hahli in their diminished forms (aka McToran forms)
